Nurse Celia Davies and Detective Nick Greaves are on the case again in old San Francisco. Set in 1868, Celia attends a society masquerade ball to celebrate the engagement of a young couple that will cement two wealthy and powerful families. Celia has reason to be concerned about the reputation of the groom and how he treats others.
When a maid is poisoned, both Celia and Nick end up hunting for the killer. Was the maid the actual intended victim or was it one of the family members who was meant to be murdered? By whom? Why?
The author takes you to the mid-nineteenth century San Francisco, providing lots of historical detail.
There were plenty of characters and lots of clues to follow to the final solution.
