Is it suicide…or murder? When PI Nicole Graves arrives at work, a couple of things she never expected happened – an earthquake followed by finding her boss shot and dying on the floor of his office. Before too long, the police are focused only on Nicole and she finds herself evading the police as she tries to prove her innocence. And Nicole cannot figure out why the police are so relentlessly pursuing her in the midst of a massive, all-hands-on-deck search and rescue mission for survivors post-earthquake.

I’ve read and enjoyed previous books in the Nicole Graves series, but this one lacked connection for me. Nicole is an interesting character who is well-drawn and faces challenging cases to figure out. This time, however, it felt much like reading a report, rather more a telling than a showing. I kept waiting for the emotion of the story to pick up given it had such promise of that with the circumstances and twists of the plot.
