This next installment in this cozy mystery series takes readers to the annual Keeneland yearling sale. When dog show judge Peg is invited to judge some dog shows in Kentucky, she invites sister-in-law Rose to join her…and to take a side trip to visit Peg’s Thoroughbred mare and colt nearby. When Peg and Rose arrive at Six Oaks to visit the horses, the friendly and personable Lucia Alvarez shows them around. There’s some unpleasantness with the yearling manager Jim Grable, who is rude to the three women.

The next day, when Jim is found murdered, Lucia appeals to Peg and Rose to back her up with the police about their interaction with Jim. But things go from bad to worse and Lucia is the focus of the police investigation. It will be up to Peg and Rose to find out who really murdered Jim.

While it’s great to have a series featuring mature sleuths and the setting of the Keeneland sale was really interesting, Peg’s inability to grow as a character is less appealing. Rose is developing her strengths and her confidence. Peg is still just brash and pushy. She was my least favorite character in the Melanie Travis series (never a clunker in that series!) and I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Peg’s character needs to become more faceted, in my opinion.
